In 1903 Bronislaus moved to Gnesen with his family where in 1904 started studying in the Handwerkskammer school, Bromberg (Crafts school, Bydgoszcz). On 23 July 1908 he graduated with a diploma (lehrbrief) of the bricklayer (maurer). The skill soon occured to be an asset and in 1910 Bronislaus joined the Kaiserlische Army and was enrolled into the ranks of the Königlich Preussisches Pommersches Pioniere. Back then Gnesen was a part of the preussisches Pommern District assigned to the II Army Corps. There was only one pionier garrison available, stationed in Stettin – Pommersches Pionier Bataillon Nr.2.
