Bronislaus recruit service began in Pommersches Pionier Bataillon Nr.2 in October 1910 – Bronislaus had then 21 years old. He served between 1910 – 1912 in the 3rd Kompanie Pommersches Pionier Bataillon Nr.2 – Koen. Pr. Ingenieur-Corps.

Prior to 1914, the engineers in Imperial German Army wore the dark blue (Dunkelblau Weffenrock’s) waffenrocks model of 1895, which characteristic feature was black colour of the collar and cuffs in “Swedish” style ended with red piping. Another important feature of the German engineers were buttons in silver colour. It should be borne in mind that the metal parts of the pioneer pickelhaube glittered in silver colours, as were made of alpaca. The red shoulder straps with embroidered yellow thread number of the battalion were sewn onto the shoulders. Due to the type of work performed by engineers, often instead of black trousers they wore work trousers (drillichhose). Inherent tool – a piece of engineer equipment was a long shovel, pick or axe attached to the belt via a special snap hook. Bronislaus hitting in 1910, the Pomeranian pioneers received surly a blue waffenrock like that.

From that time I got his Military book (Soldbuch) without covers and almost empty only on the first two pages are additional information presents Bronislaus and Kleines Schieß-Buch with results of the shooting training.

Probably all shootings were executed on the polygone in Kreckow (Krekow) – Truppenübungsplatz Kreckow bei Stettin, however stays at polygone in Hammerstein Truppenübungsplatz Hammerstein are not excluded. After finishing recruit service in October 1912 Pionier Bronislaus returned to his family in Gnesen.

    Hello Milosz,
my grandfather was a member of 2. Pionier Bataillon too, but he was in 6. Feld-Kompanie and served at the Western Front. This is, why I found your website.
I have to correct your reading in the Soldbuch (7. Signalement, Bart). This doesn’t mean “zu empfang”. The right reading is “im entstehen” = “in the beginning”.

    Greetings from Bremen, Germany
    Jens

I’m glad that you found my blog interesting. Thank you for your comments – I will update this post soon. I’m happy to come across someone who is interested in Pommersches Pionier for the same reasons I am.
    Best Regards,
    Milosz

…..and my Grandfather was stationed, married and lived happily in Gnesen also in IR 49 until the war started, participated in all the Western campaigns until wounded Nov 1914, after reconvalescence he returned to Gnesen for training recruits, later returned to the Western front and was killed in action 1.5.1918. This is his story:

  4. Milosz says:

Could you tell me in what years he lived in Gnesen? Maybe do you know where?

  5. egbert says:

    Confirmed is 1912 and very likely much earlier until 1918;
his wife from Kletzko confirmed 1904 and later lived -confirmed- in Gnesen 1912, very likely earlier until Nov 1918.
They lived in Kasernenstraße No 13a and Hospitalstraße No 1

  6. Milosz says:

I found in the internet „Adressbuch Gnesen 1906-1907″ but your grandfather is not included in this book. Probably he was moved to Gnesen as you mentioned about 1912. Did you visit Gnesen??

  7. egbert says:

Milosz, please contact me via email about my Grandfather in Gnesen

Miłoszu, jestem pod wrażeniem twoich posiadanych informacji, zdjęć i wiedzy. Czytam i oglądam z ogromnym zainteresowaniem. Książeczka wojskowa Twojego dziadka to istna kopalnia wiedzy.
Dobrzyca;pow.Pleszew;Wielkopolska.
Zmarł w szpitalu polowym 06.10.1918r. w Le Cateau (Francja).
Jeśli miałbyś jakieś pomysły na uzyskanie odpowiedzi na moje pytanie, będę wdzięczna. Prosiłabym również o podpowiedź, gdzie mogę zdobyć zdjęcia mundurów i całego wyposażenia wojskowego Dywizji mojego dziadka?
