COMMENTS: Very rare ersatz bayonet with brass handle and blade from socket Swiss bayonet model 1842. During World War I Imperial German Army developed several types similar bayonets. There are inspection marks and letter M stamped on the bayonet crossguard. The bayonet creates superb set with original ersatz scarbbard.
Hi,
interesting site.
Without knowing the exact dimensions of the blade it is very difficult to identify this ersatz. Looking at the rounded shape of the fuller I don’t think it is a Belgian a Albini blade, probably a Swiss model 1842, blade length, width and distance from the c/guard to the fuller will help to identify this rare bayonet.
I have recorded hundreds of ersatz bayonets with old socket blades in Part Two of my book, you can view pages from the site:

Hi Roy,
Thank you for your comment.
All my bayonets are in my parents house at the moment but I will ask my father to check these dimensions and I will let you know. I would like to know from what socket bayonet was this ersatz example made.
By the way I’m impress you catalogues. This is your collection of bayonets?
